Keisuke Matsuda, born in 1985 in Gunma, Japan, graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts and Music with an MA in PAINTING in March, 2010. eN arts presented his first solo exhibition, “WORDS LIE”, in December, 2010 and his second solo exhibition “WORDS LIE II” just over a year later, in February, 2011. Matsuda continues to paint in his own style — he waits for an image to appear in his mind, as if he is meditating, then uses bold brushstrokes to paint what he sees in his mind’s eye.
In the contemporary art world, concepts are an important factor in viewing an artist’s work but at times seemingly attain greater importance than the art works themselves. With Matsuda, concepts never overshadow his works or inhibit his instinctive painting. He sets himself free when succeeding in expressing images on canvas just the way he feels at the moment of their creation. For Matsuda, following his feelings is more important than trends in the art markets. His works as a result make you think twice about “The true nature of art”.
“The moment you take emotions or art works and change them in words to express them, they become lies.” is Matsuda’s thought behind the title of his shows “Words Lie”. The works exhibited in “WORDS LIE III” provide us with new excitement at each additional viewing. For this show, we introduce Matsuda’s latest abstractions, with the unique motifs and bold brushstrokes that exhibit his characteristic style, and with coloring and patterns adding to the refinement of each work. Matsuda must use total concentration to capture the colors and details of the images in his mind the instant they appear, requiring exquisite control of the brush and his paints. We hope you will enjoy the fruits of his talents and efforts.
